{"id":613,"date":"2018-08-01T08:00:16","date_gmt":"2018-08-01T13:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.behavioralhealthmn.com\/blog\/?p=613"},"modified":"2018-08-01T11:59:12","modified_gmt":"2018-08-01T16:59:12","slug":"fear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.behavioralhealthmn.com\/blog\/2018\/08\/01\/fear\/","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s Time to Kick This Four Letter F-word to the Curb!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Did you know you can significantly enhance your life by removing a certain four-letter word from your mindset?\u00a0 Do you know the one I am referring to?\u00a0 Would you like me to spell it out for you?\u00a0 It starts with an F and when used frequently, it can truly prevent us from becoming the best version of ourselves.\u00a0 It seems silly, doesn\u2019t it?\u00a0 To allow one tiny word to have so much power over us&#8230; Yet, I imagine we have all surrendered to this word at some point throughout our lives.<\/p>\n<p>If you find yourself nodding your head in agreement, please know this: you are not alone!\u00a0 In fact, this is one of the words most commonly used by clients in my therapy office when I ask the following: \u201cWhat is contributing to your hesitation, or causing you to feel stuck?\u201d\u00a0 Do you know what they say? Yes, you guessed it\u2026.\u201cF-E-A-R!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-614 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.behavioralhealthmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/fear.png\" alt=\"F-E-A-R\" width=\"745\" height=\"314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.behavioralhealthmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/fear.png 745w, https:\/\/www.behavioralhealthmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/fear-300x126.png 300w, https:\/\/www.behavioralhealthmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/fear-96x40.png 96w, https:\/\/www.behavioralhealthmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/fear-600x253.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 745px) 100vw, 745px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>F-E-A-R<\/h3>\n<p>If I were to ask you what needs to occur in order for you to live your best life- would you know the answer?\u00a0 And more importantly, would you be willing to follow the necessary steps to enhance your life? Or would that pesky four letter f-word creep into your mindset and cause you to second-guess yourself?\u00a0 If you find yourself leaning towards the second option, I encourage you to ask yourself what is at the root of your fear.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it is one of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The fear of failure<\/li>\n<li>The fear of success (yes, this is a real thing)!<\/li>\n<li>The fear of the unknown<\/li>\n<li>The fear of what other people will think<\/li>\n<li>The fear of not being good enough, strong enough, or smart enough<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you can relate to any of these previously mentioned notions, I want you to remember the following:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A reasonable amount of fear is healthy.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Fear <em>can help us<\/em> to fully think through our decisions.\u00a0 In fact, fear can also allow us the necessary time and space to explore and identify all of our options.\u00a0 However, when fear causes us to remain stagnant, it can truly hold us back from living our best lives.\u00a0 If there is potential you&#8217;ll look back on your life and feel like you settled for less, didn\u2019t live up to your full potential, or had regrets because fear got in your way, please know that you can reclaim your power at any time.\u00a0 The only way fear will win is if you allow it to!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Sometimes the biggest thing standing in your way is YOU.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If that\u2019s the case, you are in luck because you have the power to overcome your fear.\u00a0 One of the primary ways to do this is by challenging any self-limiting beliefs you may have.\u00a0 A self-limiting belief is something that causes you to doubt yourself.\u00a0 Go ahead and focus on your strengths rather than your perceived weaknesses.\u00a0 I dare you!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Balance out the \u201cwhat if\u201d mentality.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you find yourself thinking \u201cWell, what if\u2026. [insert worst-case scenario] happens&#8221; &#8211; please do yourself a favor and acknowledge the negative thought. Then shift your focus to the best-case scenario(s).\u00a0 The more time, effort, and mental energy you put into what you want to see happen, the more likely it is to become your reality.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Don\u2019t be confined by your comfort zone.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Stepping outside of your comfort zone can be tough, but guess what?\u00a0 <em>The more you step outside of your comfort zone,<\/em> <em>the larger your comfort zone becomes<\/em>!\u00a0 In fact, there is a quote by John A. Shedd, an American author and professor, that states: \u201cA ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.\u201d\u00a0 A pretty powerful quote when you really stop and think about it!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Inhale confidence &amp; exhale doubt!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once you decide to confront your fear and go after what it is you truly desire, I encourage you to keep this little mindfulness trick available to you at all times.\u00a0 As the fear begins to seep back in (as it often does), take a deep breath and think to yourself, \u201cAs I breathe in, I inhale confidence\u2026 and as I breathe out, I exhale doubt.\u201d\u00a0 Do this as many times as you need to allow these words to truly resonate with you.\u00a0 Such a simple, yet powerful, phrase to help you face your fear and embrace positive change.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-615 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.behavioralhealthmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/ship.png\" alt=\"John A.
