A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder, and is characterized by an exaggerated and often disabling fear of a specific object, activity, or situation that leads to an intense desire to avoid it. In most cases, the phobia involves a sense of endangerment or a fear of harm. Anxiety, or panic attacks can occur and as a consequence, lead some people to isolate him- or herself, affecting activities of daily living.

Types of Phobias

There are many types of phobias. Common types include fear of heights, public speaking, enclosed or open spaces, spiders, flying, or socializing with others.

Phobic symptoms usually occur through exposure to the situation or, sometimes, by thinking about it. In addition to anxiety, common physical symptoms include:

  • Sweating
  • Dizziness
  • Breathlessness
  • Nausea
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Choking sensations
  • A sense of unreality
  • A fear of dying

Phobia diagnosis is made by a mental health professional. Phobia treatment depends on the individual and the type of phobia. Treatment may include:

  • Exposure therapy, a form of psychotherapy, which helps you to better manage your thoughts, reactions, and feelings to a specific phobia
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or talk therapy
  • Medications
  • Lifestyle changes, which may include mindfulness-based stress reduction, and physical activity
