Dialectical behavioral therapy or DBT, is a therapeutic approach that combines individual therapy with group skill building and practice. Working one-to-one with your therapist, you learn to better manage powerful emotions, tolerate stress, and communicate more effectively with others, all while staying mindful, or “in the moment.” In an encouraging group setting, you have opportunity practice your newfound skills alongside others and learn how to apply them in daily life. This approach is often used to treat concerns that include personality disorders, depression, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and substance abuse.
